In her new page-turner of a novel, The Jeweled Path, author Catherine MacDonald takes the reader on an emotional ride through the downside of life. A life that even the strongest antidepressants can't help. While taking her oldest son to college, Becca learns about the jeweled path from another middle-aged mom. "It's the path all of us must travel. It is the journey of transformation at midlife. At midlife, the Self demands to be known."
The Jeweled Path is the story of a revelation and transformation. Catherine MacDonald writes, oh so wisely and well, about the discovery of truth, beauty, enrichment, and happiness by finding trust and letting go of illusions and false beliefs. Instead of going home, Becca decides to stop and take a week for herself, to try to get her life together.
In this time by herself, Rebecca Rossi faces challenges as never before, meets people who seem to be put in her path and learns lessons about herself that she had long forgotten. The scenario unfolds like a dress rehearsal of her next life, a rehearsal plotted and authored by a higher power.
The Jeweled Path resonates with truth. Catherine MacDonald weaves a story the reader can identify and align with. Here is a saga filled with spirituality and metaphysical magic that will get you to keep turning pages. Most of all, though, The Jeweled Path will get you to think!

The benefits of collective experienceReview Date: 2008-01-23
Some 634 people entered this competition: sufferers, family members and friends. Each of us wrote, from our different perspectives, on a very personal level sharing our insights and our journeys. The nett result is an inspiring collection of anonymous (but not impersonal) excerpts. I am sure that a number of us, reading through the book is search of our own contributions, have gathered additional insights along the way.
Whether you suffer from depression personally, have a family member or friend who suffers or just want to know more about the mysteries and personal manifestations of depression, this book has something to offer. Depression can be such an isolating experience: reading the inspirational stories of others can be incredibly uplifting.
Just remember, you are not alone.

The Upside of Bipolar IllnessReview Date: 2006-03-31
However, this book argues that if you compare two individuals of equal talent and equal intelligence, the one who has bipolar illness is more likely to produce works of genius because of the spurts of energy and insight that come with the illness.
A great illustration of this is the movie 'Amadeus' in which Mozart and Salieri are rival composers, but the obviously manic Mozart keeps frustrating Salieri because of the surpassing beauty of his compositions while Salieri's are brilliant but not extraordinary.
"Key to Genius" gives a startling psychohistory of 4 geniuses including Mozart and Sir Iassic Newdon. Using source documents, we see contemporary reports of these geniuses which clearly fit the DSM-IV description of manic depressive illness. We see the inflated ego of Sir Iassic Newton not sleeping for a week. The remarkable 'vision' of Mozart's Jupiter symphony entirely conceived in a split second of insight.
This book leaves one with incredible insight as to the unromantic nature of the suffering of bipolar illness, yet gives one enormous respect towards the human spirit for those few who can harness its energy, and survive its dangers. Of course there are those who do
not survive, and the book shows that Van Gogh was bipolar, not schizophrenic. Yet before he succumbed to depression, he gave the world a legacy of art that supercedes any individual genius, and shows us the best of human nature and reminds us the genius in each of us.

American Girl Kit Puts History into Context for Young ReadersReview Date: 2007-02-06
American Girl stories have a theme: Ways any girl might have coped & felt is projected onto an endearing character help bond the young reader with a topic (history) that might not have much appeal at all for her otherwise. With so much glitz and Cheap inane Bratz-like merchandise mass marketed to impressionable girls these days, American Girls stories and products are one of the all-too-few wholesome & interesting products geared directly to girls between ages 7 - 12, the early grades. There is enough real drama and historical content to make each reading session a learning experience that is amazingly enjoyable. These are not preachy, a punishment to read, or boring - and neither is it Barbie goes to Victorian America. Do we REALLY want 10 & 11 year-old girls contemplating dressing up for dates and wearing Jessica Simpson outfits -albeit vicariously? Many of us don't, yet it has become the norm and we don't want to "deprive" our daughters.
I firmly believe these materials can be used as a tool to help preserve and prolong what makes being a kid innocent & magical, rather than trying to rush them mentally into their teens & beyond. AG books are one of the best ways for young girls to gain an understanding of what life was like in America at several different points. These Short Story Collections infuse the original 6 stories about each historical character. These are not revisionist histories for adults (although charming & engaging) to dispute political vantage-points, although some think that's what is to be done with these. Instead, they're about growing up long ago. Same types of familiar emotions- while experiencing different things going on in the world, and not dumbed down. They are intelligent and discuss real things that have happened - a perfect jumping point for further and later independent study.
