McComb's comprehensive review of the lives of middle class college students during the Depression was impressive for the amount
of data collected and McComb's ability to make this information not only understandable and accessible but also relevant to
the modern world. If only all scholarly texts were so well-written!

I LOVE this series of books, (The IN AMERICAN HISTORY series) even though I'm 59 years old and the books are for young adults,
because the authors don't bore you with unnecessary details, meaningless meandering, nothing is added that has nothing to
do with the subject, and they don't write as if the book was only going to be read by MENSA members (people with very high
IQs). The books are well written, the information is precise and concise, and very easy to understand. For example, when I
read a book about the St. Valentie's Day Massacre, I don'y need to know, nor do I care, what Bugs Moran's or Al Capones' favorite
vegetable was. I want to know what complicity each had in the massacre! Pure and simply! Each book is around 130 pages long,
well researched, and full of companion books on each subject if you want to know more. A Superb, First Rate series! And as
usual; Amazons price are unbelievable... I got two of these books for 12 cents plus shipping,, and they're in Fine condition!

This book is a clear window onto a time that, for most of us, is hard to imagine. It relates the real history of regular
people in their own words. I have found it very difficult to take a break from reading it.
In particular, I would have liked to learn more about Mary Mooneyham Dixon who was sent, in 1931 at the age of six, from her home on Huger Street in Columbia, SC to the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind at Cedar Spring as a result of having lost her hearing from spinal meningitis. I have a house on Huger Street and I can't help but wonder where Mary lived.
I have been tempted to cite a few of the other stories from the book but, as I thumbed through trying to pick out a particularly special story, I found I couldn't as they are all special. It must have been a very difficult book to edit as each story is a treasure in itself and to cull any would have been an agonizing decision.
This is the sort of book where the characters really come alive as you read about their hopes, dreams, aspirations, and lives. It's almost like taking a peek into the diaries of friends and neighbors who lived in a time so near to, and yet so different from, today.

Masterpiece: Some parts dated but other parts predicted today's headlines

When this book originally came out, many of the predictions sounded outlandish. A perfect example was "Islam will replace
Marxism as the main ideology of confrontation." This sounded ludicrous at the time (1991), but as we know, this could not
have been any more prescient. The reason I call this book a masterpiece though is not simply because many of the predictions
came true in the intervening years, but the method they used to make these predictions, what they called Megapolitics, is
a still incredibly helpful way of viewing the world.
On the negative side, some of the predictions they made turned out to be dead wrong such as "huge numbers of government employess will be fired". However, this prediction and others like it were based on their conclusion that the U.S. would suffer a major Depression in the 90s where ""the value of the average private home will drop by two-thirds". Although this didn't happen in the '90s, it certainly doesn't seem completely far-fetched today.
I re-read this book recently and was again astounded that many of their descriptions of the deflation and the financial tsunami that would roil the financial markets could have been taken from today's headlines. They may have gotten some of the '90s wrong, but they got many things right and the balance of their predictions may still prove to have been as prescient as their view on Islam and Marxism.

A lesson in community spirit

What a powerful story Dr. Knepper tells of this entirely planned community originally created as an experiment in socialism.
In addition to a thorough description of historical details and events, each person is so vividly painted in their full complexities
as to make this a fascinating and almost breezy read.
I was captivated by this town who brought a developer's greed all the way to the Supreme Court, and the Capraesque fashion in which this community dealt with the McCarthy era witch hunt. I cannot recommend this enough as a sociology or government text book, as well as a worthy addition to any personal library.

Maybe I'm just noticing it more, but it seems to me that with the pressures of daily life, there are more and more people
suffering in silence with depression. This small and affordable booklet is extremely helpful in being able to recognize symptoms
of depression, knowing what to say and (thank you to the writers for this!) what NOT to say or do. It also instructs when
to seek outside help. It's so easy to ignore someone who is hurting, but this guide shows us how to look beyond our own feelings
of awkwardness and be a true friend!

This book is HIGHLY recommended for anyone who has issues with intestinal problems or children with supposed ADHD or other
behavioral problems. How many years have we been knowingly been poisoned by the food producers in this country? It's time
to take our own action to provide a better life for ourselves and our children. Read this book, change your diet and help
the children and yourselves.

As a mother of an autistic daughter I am always looking for answers to the many questions looming over this condition. This
book answers a lot of them, sometimes depressingly so, but also gives practical suggestions, guides & menus for limiting the
effects of not only autism but so many other conditions. The power of food to heal or harm is explained & offers a new perspective
from a scientific basis on how our western lifestyle is harming our children.
Excellent, dry at times but overall I learned more from this book than any of the dozens of others on this subject I've read.
