to take their own lives.

A roundtable of financial experts discusses the causes of the market crash of 1987 and compares it with other famous historic
crashes.
The market crash of the 20th October 1987 was a very serious incident. It could have completely wiped out the financial sector. As a matter of fact, the NYSE and many of its participants were bankrupt. There was no market any more. The transactions in securities could not be settled. If the Fed had not stepped in the whole financial sector would have ceased to function (W.L. Silber). But the Fed pumped up the monetary base at an annual rate of 40 % in the 2 weeks (!) after the crash.
There are parallels between the 1929 and the 1987 crashes:
In both cases people were not informed anymore: the ticker tape was delayed. People didn't know if their orders were executed and at what price. There was a cascade of stop-loss orders and margin calls.
The herd mentality set in: people sold because others were selling. Confronted with massive order imbalances the `specialists, could not fix prices.
Common features of market crash circumstances are:
- the fact that many newcomers had entered the market
- the fact that new financial instruments were created
o South Sea bubble: liquid instead of illiquid securities
o 1929: margin accounts
o 1987: program trading and portfolio insurance (insurers sell in declining markets to cut losses)
- The fact that the global economic circumstances or the profitability the new securities was difficult to evaluate
o South Sea bubble: what were the privileges of the company worth?
o 1873: what was the profitability of railroad securities?
o 1929: prices had lost contact with economic fundamentals
For the tulip bubble in Holland, the ruling elite attacked the speculation in order to channel the liquidities into the `safe' areas of economic activity ... controlled by itself (!).
When the dust settled after the crashes, the `margin-als' were wiped out and the money men stepped in (e.g. the Dutch investment fund Robeco in the 1930s).
Are there more crashes to come? For sure, as F.R. Edwards states in this volume: `It is utopian to think that panics and crashes can be legislated out of existence.'
This book is an excellent evaluation of historic economic accidents and a must read for all economists, traders and speculators.

A must-read for anyone who's depressed, Christian or not

This is the most helpful book I've ever read. If you suffer from depression (or love someone who does), this is a must-read.
It will change your whole perspective on depression, will help you get through it, and could even save a life.
I strongly feel that "Dark Clouds, Silver Linings" is appropriate for Christians and non-Christians alike. The basic facts of depression are not dependent upon a particular spiritual point of view. While Dr. Hart refers to God throughout, he does NOT say that the way to overcome depression is just to pray harder or trust God more. His suggestions are practical, effective, and based on years of experience as a researcher and a practicing psychiatrist.
What I expected from a Christian book on depression was a guilt-inducing message like, "If you trusted God enough, you wouldn't be having this problem." Or perhaps, "Rejoice in the Lord always... and get moving." Instead, Dr. Hart explains how and why depression happens (and no, it's not a faith issue), and provides realistic ways to get through it.
Dr. Hart's central idea about depression is that *most* of it happens for a reason. Depression is usually a reaction to a loss of some sort. Its purpose is to get you to STOP and FEEL the emotions connected to that loss. When you understand that, you can give yourself the space to heal the underlying issue(s). This is not to say that he recommends wallowing in a slimy mess of self-pity. He wants to help you heal the hurt, then get out of that mess and move forward.
The author acknowledges that some forms of depression are biological in nature and respond best to medication. He sees medication as neither an evil nor a panacea. It's just a tool to combat a physiological problem.
The style of the book makes the information very accessible to the average reader. The last thing you want to do when you are down in the dumps is wade through a heavy book that is full of abstract information. Dr. Hart seems to get that. He uses a Q&A style to keep the information clear, concise, relevant and easy to find.
The book is not published on fancy paper, but give it a try. There is a silver lining out there, and this book will help you find it.

This is another title I've instantly ordered based on a recommendation from the amazons, which was in turn based on my review
of Factories in the Fields. This is a much more recent book treating many of the same themes, using different sources. Here's
what the editorial description offers:
In her incisive analysis of the shaping of California's agricultural work force, Devra Weber shows how the cultural background of Mexican and, later, Anglo-American workers, combined with the structure of capitalist cotton production and New Deal politics, forging a new form of labor relations. She pays particular attention to Mexican field workers and their organized struggles, including the famous strikes of 1933.
Weber's perceptive examination of the relationships between economic structure, human agency, and the state, as well as her discussions of the crucial role of women in both Mexican and Anglo working-class life, make her book a valuable contribution to labor, agriculture, Chicano, Mexican, and California history.
Anyone interested in comprehensive immigration reform should study this and other books about farm labor systems of the past with great care. The Bush administration's proposal to create a system of temporary labor visas is nothing new; it's merely a reprisal of the worst and least successful abuses of the past.

I found De-stressing 101 to be simply amazing. Once I picked it up I could not put it down; it is really great stuff! I was
hooked from the first word. It was extremely easy to understand and follow. I appreciated the ease with which it read. It
explained the mechanism of stress and gave me very simple and effective tools to release my stress and also to avoid becoming
stressed out.

Have you ever had the feeling that somehere in your home you still had an an unfinished cup of coffee ? It is present as
an absence. I used to get that feeling so often after certain patients had left. They were not psychotic. Still, I could
not shake off that same unfinished coffee somewhere .Perplexing when you have just seen a verbal and pleasant and sometimes
very highly functioning patient.
The Dead Mother is so often behind those veils, and mirrors, and somehow empty cheer.
Thanks to this book, I no longer just FEEL the dead emptiness behind this silent fault in the earth around a patiently waiting human being. Like an experienced geologist "feels" the basic fault in the rock, I now consider
the presence of this absence in a life.I never knew what I was still trying to make up for in a seemingly "healed" and now functioning patient who is always there, like those last drops in that lost cup.
This was one of the most important and one of the most useful books I have read for my work. All clinicians should read this because I do not believe there are many who recognise the possibility of a sometime dead mother who is still alive, or a dead idealised mother who was perhaps dead when she was "alive". Or perhaps they do, but like me, it didn't click in. This is going to be endlessly fascinating for work. How I wish everyone could read it before they complacently close a file.

This handy guide gives a detailed description of depression by breaking it down and explaining the different types of depression.
It provides for a deeper understanding of all aspects of depression and is helpful to those who are battling this monster.
I find it very helpful to those of us who know someone who is depressed. It makes it easier to understand what they are

much deeper understanding of depression.
