Author Paul Swingle is one of the pioneers in the field of Brain biofeedback and the related neurotherapies. Let me be clear that he has not just been IN the field since its early days. He has played an active, creative, dynamic role in pioneering important approaches and techniques. This book has been long awaited as a practical exploration and discussion of the wide ranging approaches and models he's helped to establish.

As founder of the Futurehealth Winter Brain Meeting, which has often been credited with being the first conference on neurofeedback, it has been a pleasure to have Dr. Swingle as a speaker every year of the conference, where his new, innovative, integrative approaches has always drawn a strong audience-- where he's training the trainers.

What Dr. Swingle does best is put powerful ideas and approaches together in a way that maximizes their synergy and effectiveness. This book introduces the reader to not just neurofeedback, but the collection of ancillary techniques that make it work much better and faster.

If this were a meal, the ancillary techniques would be the fork, spoon, salt and pepper, and the many additional exotic spices that turn ordinary table fare into gourmet delight. Swingle adds his innovative approaches to the basic brainwave training that thousands do, and that's why he has one of the most successful practices in the world, and I've seen many of those other practices.

This book is for both laymen and professional biofeedback practitioners. If you are a layman, considering neurofeedback, this book will give you a good idea of both the breadth of the applications and the wide range of related approaches that work well with it. If you are a practitioner of neurofeedback, not trained by Dr. Swingle, then this book will probably open up whole new worlds of technologies and approaches you never considered as viable, valuable parts of your practice.

This is an excellent book on Mixed States and Rapid Cycling of Bipolar Disorder.

I consists mainly of scientific studies and gives a very balanced view of the current thinking.

Other books on the disorder don't mention these peculiar forms of the illness and this book fills that gap.

I suffer from Mixed States and Rapid Cycling forms of Bipolar Disorder and found the book very informative because it give information on types not covered by other books.

As someone experienced with the ups and down of depression and anxiety, I am so grateful for this book. In "Bipolar Expeditions," Martin gives us an honest and unflinching look at the lives people lead with mania and the way depression in general is shaping our world. This work should be read by everyone and anyone affected by mental illness and those looking to understand the drastic shift from 'slow and steady wins the race' to 'last one to the finish line is a rotten egg.'

P.S. Not only is there no mention of polar bears in this book, there is no 'misleading' title to indicate that possibility.

"Black Sunday" was a fascinating study of a dust storm of mythic proportions. I enjoyed reading the recollections of the storm from many of the people who experienced it. As I have never lived in the prairie states, I had no idea these "dusters" even existed.

I was given this book to read in English class and I thought, "great, another boring novel." But I was blown away. It was quite possibly one of the books I've read. It had qualities of Forrest Gump as well as Saving Private Ryan. And a great metaphor of the train. I greatly suggest you read this book.

Great early Lansdale!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-29
This was a fabulous book! Lansdale is a great writer for many reasons one of which is his ability to write in so many different genres. Lansdale wrote The Boar very early in his career. In the introduction Lansdale discusses the genesis of the story and the journey to get it published. This alone was very interesting.

The story itself is a well-written period piece. It takes place in Texas during the depression. It is the story of a 15 year old boy and an almost mythical wild boar that threatens his family.
