It provided clear information about adolescent depression and helped us tremendously. I followed the sugegestions in the book during the treatment process for my child's depression. Even my child's psychiatrist found it useful. Depression is an illness that affect whole family, sick or not, in every sigle minute of the day. I learned to manage my own anxiety too. Parents and patients usually were panic due to lack of understanding of the disease. I consult this book again and again, before and after the appointment to the psychiatrist and psychologist. It really helped me and my family.

Ms. Keena's book offers a unique and empathetic aid to anyone struggling with adolescent depression--as caretaker or patient. For therapist, parent or the depressed adolescent herself, it provides both left-brained and right-brained perspectives on this often hereditary disease. By alternating between clinical observations from her current counseling work, and creative writings from her own teen years, Keena gives us a window into the mind of the clinically depressed, at times offering some gems of poetic expression as well as tools for understanding. She also inspires us by showing how she survived the sometimes fatal disease in order to live a productive and happy adulthood.

Adrift is about 14 year old David and his 10 year old sister Laura whom David takes care of. The reason why David cares for his sister is because 5 years ago his mother became SERIOUSLY depressed and his father and mother separated. They used to be a happy family but now the cant even talk to their own mother that they live with and their father lives farther away. The during the family vacation with their father the children find out that they will be shipped to Vancouver to live with their Aunt Jennifer while their mother can stabilize. (They all learn this after they meet their dad's new girlfriend). So Laura and David go to Vancouver and spend time with their aunt and start to learn how to be children again and having fun. Later on their father decides to come and visit them in Vancouver and 2 days later David overhears his father and aunt talking about things concerning his mothers depression and the family and David decides to make a decision that can and will affect his and his family's future.

I found this book to be very fascinating and the fact that it is a true story about the author's life growing up during The Great Depression made it that more interesting. Once you begin to read it, you can't put it down! This would make a great Christmas gift for the young and old alike. Truly a wonderful book by a superb author!

An important part of the current literature on attachment and neurobiology - seems to have spurred on a great deal of research, writing and dialogue. It'd probably be helpful to brush up on at least the basics of brain physiology and neurobiology before jumping into this book - but the basics are easy enough to follow and the implications are profound.

During a recent trip to the United States, I found a used copy of this excellent book and found it very timely in view of the new American War on Terrorism. Dr. Abert describes with wit and insight many of the reasons that we face a major world-wide economic upheaval. More importantly, he suggests positive strategies for coping with crises. In many ways, Abert anticipated the recent popularity of 'voluntary simplicity' and shows remarkable insights into the nature of economics and human beings. I would like to see what he is thinking now.

Bindas found a subject largely ignored by all Americans: the FMP. We've all heard about the other projects, the FWP, the FTP, and the FAP, but history has ignored music. Bindas records an invaluable piece of Americana that could soon be lost forever.

I believe this book to be the only of its kind, a sad indication of what Americans find noteworthy about their heritage. Reading it is worthwile and fulfilling.

This is one of the few places in print where I have seen the dangers of soy written about. I would like to photocopy that chapter alone, and send it to the many companies who overuse soy. Causing too much time reading labels in the supermarket. Many people have not discovered that soy is a major allergen, and a major contributor to depression (omega 6 and omega 3 need to be in 1:1 ratio in order for us to be healthy, sadly since soy is so overused the ratio is drastically altered to 20:1 in favor of omega 6 (soy is an omega 6). Most of the other information is rudimentary, but still important.
