Get ready to Laugh; Get ready to Cry -- A Must-Read for All!Review Date: 2003-11-20
The book was so interesting, not only because I know Janet and could actually picture her reading the story to me in her beautiful English accent, but the many nuggets I got from the book had me laughing, brought tears to my eyes at times, as well as enlightening me on a medical condition that many suffer with but that I really knew very little about.
I plan on buying a few more copies to give as Christmas presents.
Thank you, Janet, for a VERY enjoyable book!

People & Places Framed in Tumultous Times of ChangeReview Date: 2006-12-23
that they influence history. John Wilson was a keen observer of people who were genuine leaders and fairly portrayed their strengths and weaknesses.
As both an Indiana reporter, and a key player in the Justice Department, he
saw six decades of pivotal history in civil rights, Supreme Court rulings,
and tragic scandals. He reported at a time when reporters and office holders used tact and diplomacy before greedy scoops. His summations give credit to those who aided him through the years, instilling a sense of gentlemanly conduct. He longs for the days to return when both sides of a question are fairly debated. I could not put this book down and read it straight through.

Same ACT channel, same ACT material, but many new techniques & tipsReview Date: 2008-05-26
- Strong and useful explanation of why we get depressed in the first place. Blaming biology or history doesn't help us; a more useful stance, as the authors explain, is to look not just at the pain in our lives, but at how we react to that pain. Avoidance pushes us into depression, acceptance and action pull us back into life.
- A full chapter on how our mind tricks us with reasons & stories that seem to "make sense," but actually keep us stuck.
- Nice accompanying CD with guided meditation exercises of various sorts, some for learning mindfulness skills, others for getting in touch with our intuition about what we really want to do in life.
- Good closing chapters on building ACT habits that will last rather than fizzle.

Another great read from one of my favorite authors.Review Date: 1999-12-31
Moonshine and Old Fashioned ValuesReview Date: 2000-02-13
Set in the hills and hollers of Missouri, the book shows a poor but hardy people trying to make a meaningful life while facing hardships. While the main thread of the story is about revenuers finding stills and stamping out "moonshine", the real story is about what is takes to be a father, what it takes to be a freind. An added bonus in the book is a view of Ozark landscapes, superstitions, and culture of hill folks.
Despite some sorrows and heartaches necessary for a good story, the books ends on a lovely note of hope. This is a feel good story woven around a boy and his dog.

This outstanding reference volume is also a terrific read.Review Date: 2006-10-14
Fully 25% of the population was out of work at the peak of the Great Depression and most of those who were lucky enough to be employed were living from paycheck to paycheck. Surely, the sad state of this nation's economy would have to qualify as the major story of that decade. Yet, while it may not have been all that evident at the time there were a myriad of important social and cultural changes taking place in this country in the 1930's. The relatively new medium of radio was hitting it's stride. Radios were affordable and could be found in nearly every home. Motion pictures were no longer silent and the "swing" era was upon us. Great songwriters like Jerome Kern, Rogers and Hart, the Gershwins and Irving Berlin were busy creating memorable tunes that would one day fill the Great American Songbook. And for the first time ever the music of talented black artists like Fats Waller and Duke Ellington was being heard by white America. Sounds exciting doesn't it? In "Music of the Great Depression", co-authors William H. Young and Nancy K. Young bring these and other 1930's social and cultural trends to life. This is an informative and fascinating walk down memory lane.
As a reference book, "Music of the Great Depression" succeeds on every level. This book is just packed with all kinds of useful information for those seeking to do research on this period. But what makes this book so unique is that it is also a terrific cover to cover read at the same time.
In fact, I am not sure I have ever come across anything quite like it. In addition, the authors take the time to discuss some of the less popular musical genres such as folk, gospel, western swing and the blues. The fact of the matter is I simply did not want to put this book down. As someone who has been a student of American popular music for several decades I must tell you that I found a tremendous amount of new and useful information in this book. My hats off to the authors for a truly phenomenal job. In my opinion, "Music of the Great Depression" deserves a spot in every library in America. It is that good. Very highly recommended!
