I found this old book sitting on our living room shelf, hidden away, and forgotten. After struggling with depression for a few years now, I picked up this book, started to read, and an hour later I had a whole new perspective on life. I can't believe this book originally sold for only $1.50 in comparison to the books that the so-called experts are releasing (and I've read them all!). This book speaks with empathy and understanding, not psychobabble. This book is a must-have for anyone struggling with depression and their faith. I can't believe it went out of print! Get it now!

Excellent Book on Self-Acceptance

This is a highly practical book on the subject of self acceptance. Trobisch discusses how lack of self acceptance is the really lack of self love and how critical it is in the make up of an individual. He does a good job of outlining the serious consequences of lack of self acceptance and gives some tested practical solutions on overcoming the depression from it.

Plenty of books on Depression-era glassware are on the market so it's refreshing to view a different focus in Mauzy's Rare, Unusual and Unique Depression Glass, a book directed to avid collectors who have come across rare pieces needing identification. Also exceptional are good-sized color photos displaying the pieces, along with notes on makers and history. There are no valuation notes here, but the survey of over 200 noteworthy pieces of vintage glassware - many thought to be the only one in existence - makes for an outstanding specialty item.

Janet pulls you into the story of her journey through her depression with amazing candour, and tantalising humour. Her brutal honesty, along with her intelligent and witty writing style makes this a gripping read from page one. I couldn't put it down, and was truly impressed by her talent. Anyone who needs reassurance that it's ok to suffer through life's trials, be it depression or not, and come out on top with a smile, should read this.

I finished reading Janet's book last night -- and if you haven't bought it, YOU NEED TO!

The book was so interesting, not only because I know Janet and could actually picture her reading the story to me in her beautiful English accent, but the many nuggets I got from the book had me laughing, brought tears to my eyes at times, as well as enlightening me on a medical condition that many suffer with but that I really knew very little about.

I plan on buying a few more copies to give as Christmas presents.

Thank you, Janet, for a VERY enjoyable book!

People & Places Framed in Tumultous Times of Change

Review Date: 2006-12-23
There are those who form the catalysts in our lives, who lead in such a way
that they influence history. John Wilson was a keen observer of people who were genuine leaders and fairly portrayed their strengths and weaknesses.
As both an Indiana reporter, and a key player in the Justice Department, he
saw six decades of pivotal history in civil rights, Supreme Court rulings,
and tragic scandals. He reported at a time when reporters and office holders used tact and diplomacy before greedy scoops. His summations give credit to those who aided him through the years, instilling a sense of gentlemanly conduct. He longs for the days to return when both sides of a question are fairly debated. I could not put this book down and read it straight through.

Disclaimer: I was born and reared in Indianapolis and represented it in the U.S. House for 30 years. So naturally I savor this book about the people and places I know well. However, the book goes beyond the borders of my state, both because the author had two careers in Washington,D.C. and because the book is a beautiful ride in a time machine to palpable American history, styles, customs, attitudes, governmental policies and, yes, a fair amount of nievate about such things as tobbaco and slick sales scams.

A Good Reference

I refer to this book constantly. I think it's great to have a book like this handy if you take psychiatric drugs. Of course, new medications are hitting the market all the time, so books like this tend to need updating fairly regularly. This book is three years old, so I hope a new edition is due out soon.

Don't See a Psychiatrist Without It!

An excellent guide to psychiatric medications with brief descriptions of mental illnesses, this book should be within arm's reach of every patient and involved family member for constant reference. You will do both yourself and your doctor a favor by becoming familiar with the group of drugs relevant to your particular diagnosis. As your doctor briefly describes each possible drug and its profile (including side effects) during an office visit, you will be hard-pressed to remember this information or to hurriedly take legible and complete notes. For a modest price, you can relax and keep extensive information about a dizzying array of drugs at your fingertips. All drugs have side effects, from troublesome to dangerous, so become an educated consumer. You owe it to yourself and family members you care about. I have found it to be an invaluable reference which is readable and even fascinating, aimed at the layperson.

Strosahl and Robinson follow in the path of "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life" but focus specifically on depression. A little New Age-y here & there, which initially might or might not be a turn-off, depending on how you feel about such things - but stick with it, because there's lots of powerful material here:

- Strong and useful explanation of why we get depressed in the first place. Blaming biology or history doesn't help us; a more useful stance, as the authors explain, is to look not just at the pain in our lives, but at how we react to that pain. Avoidance pushes us into depression, acceptance and action pull us back into life.

- A full chapter on how our mind tricks us with reasons & stories that seem to "make sense," but actually keep us stuck.

- Nice accompanying CD with guided meditation exercises of various sorts, some for learning mindfulness skills, others for getting in touch with our intuition about what we really want to do in life.

- Good closing chapters on building ACT habits that will last rather than fizzle.

Above and beyond the anatomy of depression and the unnecessary rift, in my opinion, between allopathic and holistic medical philosophies, herein lies the journey of a soul. In reading Misdiagnosis one is given the inside view of issues we all face in one way or another, and then shown, in touching detail, how one courageous man battled over and over again with his personal demons.... and won. We all have difficulties with life. Buy this book, it will uplift you.

I was drawn in by the charm but hardships of life in Thad McCune's backward Ozark town. This book made me feel differently about historical fiction and I now give it more respect. I had not realized what could be done with this sort of book.

Moonshine and Old Fashioned Values
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-13
This book is a great read for all ages. While young readers can get a view of life in the past, oldsters can enjoy the vivid portrayal of simpler but harder times. The main character Thad deals with honesty, loyalty, work ethic, meaning of truth and growing up.

Set in the hills and hollers of Missouri, the book shows a poor but hardy people trying to make a meaningful life while facing hardships. While the main thread of the story is about revenuers finding stills and stamping out "moonshine", the real story is about what is takes to be a father, what it takes to be a freind. An added bonus in the book is a view of Ozark landscapes, superstitions, and culture of hill folks.

Despite some sorrows and heartaches necessary for a good story, the books ends on a lovely note of hope. This is a feel good story woven around a boy and his dog.

In the 1930's America was experiencing it's most trying economic downtown.
Fully 25% of the population was out of work at the peak of the Great Depression and most of those who were lucky enough to be employed were living from paycheck to paycheck. Surely, the sad state of this nation's economy would have to qualify as the major story of that decade. Yet, while it may not have been all that evident at the time there were a myriad of important social and cultural changes taking place in this country in the 1930's. The relatively new medium of radio was hitting it's stride. Radios were affordable and could be found in nearly every home. Motion pictures were no longer silent and the "swing" era was upon us. Great songwriters like Jerome Kern, Rogers and Hart, the Gershwins and Irving Berlin were busy creating memorable tunes that would one day fill the Great American Songbook. And for the first time ever the music of talented black artists like Fats Waller and Duke Ellington was being heard by white America. Sounds exciting doesn't it? In "Music of the Great Depression", co-authors William H. Young and Nancy K. Young bring these and other 1930's social and cultural trends to life. This is an informative and fascinating walk down memory lane.
As a reference book, "Music of the Great Depression" succeeds on every level. This book is just packed with all kinds of useful information for those seeking to do research on this period. But what makes this book so unique is that it is also a terrific cover to cover read at the same time.
In fact, I am not sure I have ever come across anything quite like it. In addition, the authors take the time to discuss some of the less popular musical genres such as folk, gospel, western swing and the blues. The fact of the matter is I simply did not want to put this book down. As someone who has been a student of American popular music for several decades I must tell you that I found a tremendous amount of new and useful information in this book. My hats off to the authors for a truly phenomenal job. In my opinion, "Music of the Great Depression" deserves a spot in every library in America. It is that good. Very highly recommended!

William H. Young and Nancy K. Young's Music Of The Great Depression joins others in the 'American History Through Music' series, considering American history and the different styles of music which have influenced it. Different genres and styles of music are analyzed through this history of the Depression years, from jazz to folk and classical, Broadway to popular music. Biographical sketches of influential musicians of the times are included, but the most intriguing aspects of Music Of The Great Depression cover music trends and how they developed.
