Aging Well opened my eyes to the realities of aging, what one can expect, and how to accomplish the inevitable with grace. Hitting mid-life, beginning to see age ahead, and full of society's usual misconceptions, I read this at a very opportune time. I passed it on to people who work with the elderly, who have found Ms. Hills' insights, and her wide reading in the field, invaluable resources to their work. To find, in one place, the whole current field of thought on aging is so very valuable. A must for anyone over 19!

Good for all ages. A superior moral story here. An accurate description of life during the Great Depression. Teaches children and teens how to appreciate the life we have now but also makes one yearn for life in the "olden days" when family-life seemed to be much more valued than it is in these fast-paced days. Adults would enjoy this just as much as it allows them to reminisce about times past when they "didn't even know we were poor." Five stars all the way! I cannot wait until Mrs. Ellis writes another book!

This is not a book by a doctor writing about patients, and it's not full of "self-help" platitudes -- it's by an ordinary woman who's suffered from depression herself and has some very practical advice on what to do about it. She knows it's terrible -- but she also knows you can get through it.

What should you eat when you're depressed? What do you do if you're just barely functioning? What if you're so depressed you can't move? What'll happen if you just hide under the covers and cry? (I tried this, thinking it would last hours, but I got bored after about 20 minutes. And I never would've tried it if not for this book.)

Best of all, there's a 14-day plan to get you back on track as fast as possible. Looking at the journal I kept while following the plan, I can see the external problems I wrote about haven't gone away -- but I'm not depressed about them anymore. No more obsessive misery -- that's what this book can help you to.

With the "Bible" being the most widely published, distributed and read book of all times; Dr. Chapman "inspires us" with what I would consider a supplement to the "Bible" and its teachings. Dr. Chapman shares with us the powerful message of God's spoken word and shows us how it can be used to counsel and guide us and others with dealing with life's many obstacles.

I found the glossary of terms that are included made reading more "enlightening and pleasurable".

This is a great resource for educators, counselors, doctors, married couples and singles or anyone seeking an alternative counseling methodology.

Let it be marital problems, passing of a love one, financial issues, career issues, incarceration, guiding and motivating our children or simply making peace with God, I found this book to be a phenomenal resource to help each of us bring peace and serenity to our lives.

I commend Dr. Chapman on his work and highly recommend this book.

This book is a tremendous endorsement for the value of the Christian Counselor. The Third Force the Christian counselor brings with them in the counseling process is noted again and again in the book. As a Christian Guidance counselor in a secular school, I can relate to the effect the Third Force can have in the lives of troubled youth.

Everyone needs a helping hand at times.

Review Date: 2006-11-06
This book is designed to be a helping hand in that it is written to help those who are coping with situations and circumstances that cause grief, mental anguish, and at times heartbreak. At the other end of the spectrum is the supportive role Bible-based Counseling plays for the entire human family. For example--in chapter one--guidance counseling helps students in adjusting their curriculum to the needs of whatever their career track requires. Some students will follow the academic path that leads to college. Others will take the trade track and go directly into the work force.

Most of all the author touches on the physical, mental and spiritual spheres of a persons life. In a secular school or being counseled by a secular counselor the spiritual deminsion would be ignored.

The author grounds this book with solid biblical principles and appropriate related scripture. He also uses references from other authors who are bible-based counselors, psychologists, or psychiatrists which assures validation of this excellent book. The writer is very practical in pin-pointing how this book has many applications--from child guidance to how to handle depression to crisis in a person's life. Finally he talks about grief---sometimes a good friend holding the sobbing, grief stricken person in their hands is all that is needed to bring comfort. I believe every family should have this reference manuel in their home.

This is an outstanding book, for professionals and casual readers alike. Dr. Woods breaks down the taboo of teenage suicide with personal anecdotes and a truly engaging style. She shows us that this subject, which might make us cringe, is a very real part of our world, with impacts ranging from the quiet lives of individual families to headline-grabbing events such as the Columbine massacre. Rock music lyrics, a teenager's internal tug-of-war between pressure to achieve and desire not to disappoint, gender- all these aspects and others are brought into the open and discussed in a way that is both interesting and scientifically sound.
The entire book is solidly supported with references from medical and scientific journals, yet the author's writing style makes this book completely engaging and a truly absorbing read. It is an empowering book: it not only lists signs that can indicate a greater risk for teen suicide, but goes on to describe ways of addressing them- some original and logical "do's" and "don'ts". Overall, I loved this book because of the undeniable importance of the subject and the author's terrific writing style.

A subject rarely talked about in public and even less in schools. Teenage suicide is a problem that we must actively deal with. Dr. Woods gives insight into the many ways that we as individuals can make a difference in another person's life and possibly prevent another person from taking their own life. Dr. Woods explores many cases of teenage suicide showing many different view points of triggers that can lead to suicide - signs to look out for and possible approaches to handle them. It is commonly believed that depression is the sign to look for in a person who is considering suicide. Often this is not the case as Dr. Woods illustrates.
The book does not cover all the reasons for suicide such as side effects of a medication, nor does it claim to be the definitive encyclopedia on the subject. More importantly it sheds a light on an epidemic that is prevalent in our society and should be discussed towards prevention and positive action.
This is an important book that parents and adults who work children with should read.

Finally, a truly useful book for dealing with the emotional side of having cancer. Hopko and Lejuez have assembled a collection of sensible techniques based on years of research on depression, anxiety, and the experience of cancer. The book begins with four chapters of useful information about cancer, cancer treatments, depression, anxiety, and the problems of avoiding upsetting situations. This is followed by six chapters of specific, well-reasoned, step-by-step instructions for overcoming depression and anxiety. (Contrary to what was said in another review, this book is not about being cured of cancer through the power of your mind - It's about coping with the emotional side of having cancer and working toward a happier and more fulfilling life). As a researcher and a clinician familiar with these issues, I would recommend this book to people coping with cancer and to therapists working with cancer patients.

This workbook has been extremely helpful in my life. It has made life with cancer more manageable and relieved my depression and anxiety. It is very user-friendly and doesn't try to confuse the reader with complicated professional lingo. The exercises are very easy to do, well structured, and not as time-consuming as some others I have tried. (The mindfulness techniques are especially great for when my kids are getting on my nerves!). This book has made my life a lot less stressful.

This book steps up to the next level from those worthy guides published in earlier decades by Mary M. Wetzel-Tomalka. Full color illustrations, beautifully executed, and a complete round up of the production line. If you are newly interested or a serious veteran collector, you'll find this volume an indispensable reference source. The valuation prices do seem a little high and perhaps ought to be regarded best for insurance purposes. Normal auction and most shop prices for commonly found items will be less than those presented here. However, as happened with Mary M. Wetzel-Tomalka's books, the piece costs may soon approach those shown in this book, so maybe the authors are only thinking a little ahead of the curve. Highly recommended for the reference shelf.

Candlewick, one of the most popular lines of glass produces by the Imperial Glass Corporation of Bellaire, Ohio, was introduced in 1936 and manufactured until the company's closing in 1984. Today this pattern, made in crystal and many lovely colors, attracts avid collectors of fine glassware. In this beautifully photographed and carefully researched book, nearly every item in the crystal line is shown and discussed. The authors have used Imperial's factory records, catalogs, and price lists to assemble extensive background information on these exclusively crystal Candlewick pieces. Organized in easy-to-use categories, the book covers place settings, serving pieces, sets, and miscellaneous items such as ashtrays, candle holders, compotes, and vases. To further help with identification, undocumented pieces, reproductions, and similarities are shown as well. Measurements are all of Candlewick's stem and tumbler lines are included, as well as many new facts not published before. Values are included both in the captions and in an overall price guide organized by mold number. This book is an essential reference for Candlewick collectors and all who enjoy beautiful glass.

Very readable and useful self-help manual

As a clinical psychologist, I am a strong believer in the impact of thinking on emotions, and thus many of my interventions with my own clients are cognitive in nature. The premise of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is that the way we think determines the way we feel, and this book Change Your Thinking, is a self-help manual designed to address stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional concerns through the use CBT. At the heart of CBT is the ability to recognize faulty thinking. The author describes the typical thinking errors which were originally identified by Aaron Beck in his ground-breaking book Cognitive Therapy of Depression; these include polarized (black-and-white) thinking, overgeneralizing, personalizing, filtering, jumping to (negative) conclusions, mind reading, blaming, labeling, predicting catastrophe, and comparing.

After Edelman has coached the reader in becoming adept at increasing awareness of negative thinking patterns, she moves on to the process of disputing negative and irrational beliefs; she then applies the disputation techniques to various types of concerns. Throughout the book, Edelman offers exercises to help readers apply the concepts which she has presented. Although Edelman borrows from the work of various giants in the field of psychology, she presents this information in a manner that is extremely accessible to the average reader and that is also appropriate to a self-help format. Given this, I highly recommend Change Your Thinking as a means for the general reader to apply the principles of CBT to their own lives.

I never thought a book could make such a difference!

Normally I don't think books like this are very helpful, but Change Your Thinking is really helping me to change my life. When I started reading it, I immediately felt like I could get back in control and actually improve what I had accepted as the status quo. The author gives a lot of simple tips that WORK, and the exercises are a big help. This is something that you need to commit to, but if you read this book and make even a tiny effort to pay attention to your thoughts you'll notice a difference.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone with depression or anxiety (I suffer from both).

I found this book in my local library after my psychologist recommended I look into CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). I brought it home, read the first 2-3 chapters, then went online & ordered my copy from Amazon with expedited shipping.I have since fired my psychologist (saving $120-$240 an hour). However, I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE FOR EVERYONE. I was diagnosed with ADHD, depression, a few other little things, so I've been able to incorporate thought-monitoring into my consciousness & have had a lot of success with CBT in general. The explanations, examples, & thought-monitoring form are great. On the plus side, I am a stay-at-home mom, so I have the time to stop what I'm doing & do a little maintenance on myself when needed, something not everyone will be able to do. But if you get the book, take the time to read it & take the effort to apply the principles, apart from or in conjunction with a mental health provider, I believe you'll see definite results.Definitely a 5-star book.

Charlotte's Story, written by Charlotte Arpis Niedhauk, edited by Mary-Alice Herbert, and published by Laurel and Herbert, is a fascinating page turner as well as an important historical document of how a young couple managed to exist alone on an isolated Florida Key in 1934-5. Their survival reminds one of the manner in which people lived before the advent of electricity, supermarkets, running water, or any of the modern conveniences. Their "store" was the beach, where they would look for and find what they needed from raw materials cast forth by the ocean. Charlotte's resourceful husband Russ would make such objects as a dipper from a coconut shell with a handle carved from a madiera limb, a windproof ashtray from the bottom of a shell, fish and lobster traps, kitchen cabinets, and even a jewelry box from a coconut for Charlotte from their "lumber store," the beach. City-bred Charlotte learned to cope with mosquitoes, sandflies, and scorpians, and even how to scull a boat. Their island home was visited by a potpouri of strange, often frightening characters, who threatened theri lives and made off with their property. No one who reads the book will ever forget the couple's experience in the terrible hurricane of Sept. 3, 1935. According to a newspaper report, the barometric pressure was the lowest ever recorded in thehistory of world weather. Excerpts are given from Russ's diary, i.e."Violent wind squalls lasting from 20 to 25 minutes. Sometimes with wind bursts to 70 or 80 miles per hour....Charlotte is sitting on the floor in the open doorway. She saw the tide receed 50 feet before each squall, and then return with a rush. Each time a little higher. No waves visible. The wind has blown the tops off. Afraid for our boat at high tide...The roof of the old house is blowing off in chunks. I can't stop it." After the hurricane was over, the couple decided that being alone on an island had lost its attraction for them, and decided it was time to return to the homeland. At the beginning of their sojourn on Elliott Key, Charlotte seems a naive, somewhat helpless young female. It was a delight to see her grow into a resourceful, independent woman who was an equal partner to her husband. She wrote her story from notes and memorabilia almost a quarter of a century after they left Elliott Key. The first edition of Charlotte's Story was published in different form by Exposition Press in 1973. When the book went out fo print, the clamor for it was so great that Laurel and Herbert republished and reedited it in 1998. This is a book for everyone, Florida Keys residents, tourists, feminists and macho men alike; in other words for simply everyone who loves a good read.

Just an awesome book.

For Keys Fiction Readers

While seeking some new Keys Fiction I had the good fortune to have this gem of personal prose proposed by a good bookseller. Normally I like fiction, but I was desperate for a book to read beside the Gulf, and what a read it was. This is the Florida of legend, the roots of Hall, White and Corcoran can be found here. The difference is this is real. Islands with one owner, bootleggers, rum running, customs men, body dumping, good old boys and gals, boat "lighteners," conch lassoing, lime tree tending, chowder cooking and endless beach combing for demi-johns, mahogany, cedar, planks and boxes. All told in simple, straight-forward prose. What I am trying to put into words is that this is an enjoyable adventure in reality for those of us who like the fictional adventure of the contemporary Keys writers. Oh. and the wicked developers are not there yet, but the sense of their impending arrival is clearly here in the devil may care attitude many express who live in this wonderful piece of history.
