Wow, is this a mature book. It covers nearly every pattern I've run into, gives a good history and overview of nearly every one, has realistic prices, lists each piece, identifies and describes (yes, describes) how individual reproduction pieces can be spotted. The patterns are listed alphabetical.

The only way I'd improve on it (and this goes for all these books) is adding a little cross-referencing between similar patterns. I've had to write in the book "similar patterns: ..., ..., ...".

My wife is a very active collector of all types, manufacturers, styles and colors of depression glass. Over the years she has become quite proficient in her knowledge but always appreciates a good authoritive up to date source of pricing, photo and description. This photographic reference along with pricing has been a welcomed addition to her book collection. The book is very well done with clear photos and good product descriptions. Pricing will always be difficult to lock down in print as prices vary from region to region but as a reference source to see what direction and what pace the pieces are moving in value as compared to earlier editions of pricing guides, this book does well. I would see this book in the hands of both an experienced collector as well as someone just starting out to enjoy this facinating type of collectible. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained from this book.

I've spent a long time pondering my past and tried to make 'forgetting' my priority. This book has changed all that. There is nothing more frightening than waking or falling asleep to flick images of a moment or a time you have apparently forgotten - especially if it's something so terrible that you could only possibly associate it with a nightmare.

This book is about one woman's devastating past that becomes at war with her mind. An amazing story about past hurt and abuse that inevitably comes back to haunt 'Linda Caine,' and in the most distructable form possible...end the life - stop the pain.
A powerful book filled with despair, devastation, love and hope.

Thank you xxKxx

Superbly written, once i started reading i couldn't put it down! You get totally involved & lost in what's happening in the book. The struggle Linda (as well as her family) went through for so many years, & the realisation of what actually happened to her is indescribable. Made me face my little demons, & re-think & re-prioritise my life.

A 'Must' Read!

I read this book in one sitting! Each chapter moved me to tears. It is a book about a woman's struggle with her(Linda) past that seems to haunt her and that unfolds beautifully in this book. Robin's chapters also shed much needed light and prespective to Linda's struggles. If this book was fictional it would have been storytelling at its best but given it is a true story makes it profound! Touching, inspiring, thought-provoking, thrilling and moving! It is witten in simple yet powerful words. It is one book anyone with a heart would love!

Linda Caine is an artist; Robin Royston a practicing psychiatrist specializing in trauma: the two met up when Linda Caine began experiencing flashbacks and images out of nowhere. Together the two began an exploration of African roots which were to reveal the heart of forgotten memories and the source of Caine's depression, making her autobiography OUT OF THE DARK an emotionally charged, volatile self-exploration.

Inspiring and heart breaking

This book tells the story of a remarkable woman who has endured alot of pain and hardship in her life. Spanning 3 continents and all the various incidents which encompasses her life experiences, Linda Caine's story tells of a woman's re-awakening to the worst horror of her life - having been abused as a child with her mum complicit. I was fasinated by how the truth which she managed to block out for most of her life came back in an insidious way to haunt her. It is almost as if it was forcing her to acknowledge it, and almost as if her unconscious was adamant that she realised what it was she had gone through. Linda Caine's courage and strength in the face of all this revelation and how her faith pulled her through is uplifting and inspiring. I also enjoyed reading about the people who cared for her and who were selfless in their wish to see her recover and gain control over her life again. It is amazing how a woman who has lived through so many bad times has such a love and zest for life and all things living. It's a miracle that none of the nastiness and evil in life has managed to tarnish the core of her person. A very honest and heart felt piece of writing, and a real triumph for those who survived the difficult period.

I stayed up long into the night to finish this book and it was my favorite book for a very long time.
It tells the story of Francesca, whose mom is suddenly not herself and stays in bed all day. We later learn she has depression. As if Francesca's family life could not get more complicated, she goes to a private school where she has no friends and there are no opprotunities for girls. But along the way she learns about herself and the people at her school and even finds herself falling in love with one of them!
Any girl can identify with Francesca's story and anyone can laugh along with her witty observations. She is one of those characters whose desicions I love. I don't spend my whole time groaning when the character does this or that, in fact, I applaud her.

I'm surprised a middle-age English teacher chose this!

I have to read this for summer reading going into 9th grade and then write and essay. I chose it because it seemed pretty interesting. Little did I know that I would love it! I read it in a few hours. It's pretty deep. I know why my English teacher chose it. It seems kind of like a typical teen novel but it's definetely much much more than that. I recommend it!

New girl Francesca Spinelli never anticipated finding happiness at Saint Sebastian's. A high school in Sydney, Australia that "pretends it's a coed school by giving the girls their own toilet". Not only is this spunky teen surrounded by disgusting boys, but the only girls at St. Sebastian's are freaks. Things only get worse when an unexplainable obstacle appears. The "Queen of Limitation Placers" (a.k.a "Mom" and "Mia"), suddenly resigns from her position to lie in bed all day. It began with an excuse of physical illness, but after weeks Mia's emotional condition becomes apparent. Her state of depression is tearing the Spinelli's apart. Francesca is with deep grief led to believe the upbeat woman who used to begin the day singing inspirational songs and posting motivational messages around the house had lost her love for life because of her children. As Francesca's life at home rapidly plunges downhill, schools only comfort are her friends. However, who in the midst of her current hardships are real friends is not yet clear. To top off this teen's misery Francesca's heart is stolen by an unexpected love.
Through a book about love, friendship, family and despair Marchetta kept me interested with a unique array of characters and the portrayal of emotional disasters within a family. The author's craft was witty and spunky like Francesca from a first person's view. I don't believe it was written from any religious perspective, although St. Sebastian's is a Catholic school. The pace was average. I recommend this book to female teens and parents who want to remember what it's like to be in their daughter's shoes.

Since Yesterday

Review Date: 2008-05-07
'Since Yesterday' (1940) is a journalistic history of the 1930's in America. Frederick Lewis Allen also wrote 'Only Yesterday' (1930) about the 1920's, and these two books are probably his most well known and popular. It is written in a conversational tone for a popular audience and at times is really entertaining and fascinating. It's at its best discussing popular culture and the changing zeitgeist of America, the political and economic history is often a bit dry. It's valuable for learning about the era because it was one of the first attempts at writing a history of the 1930's, when the events were still fresh, the episodes Allen focuses on are what the people of the time found the most important and foremost in their conscious. Thus one gets a sense of how events flowed together, how one thing effected the next, a more holistic view. The 1930's were very dynamic for a lot of reasons, probably one of the most rapidly changing of the 20th century despite it's sordid reputation for gangsters, dust bowls and the depression - World War II was largely a product of the (failed) politics of the 1930's and that war defined the rest of the century (and beyond). My interpretation (not Allen's) is that empowering technological innovations had spread to the masses: cars, radio, machinery, electricity - these things created more free time (5-hr work week, leisure time), rising rates of education and political involvement - all part of a bigger continuing process that can be seen in the world today in China, India, etc.. we have much to learn about the changes other countries are going through by looking back at the changes in our own country in the 1930's.

While I found this book a bit less engaging than his previous effort on the 1920s, it was nonetheless a fascinating look at the decade by someone who had just lived through it. As an author who sets some pulp-style stories in the era it provides an invaulable overview and copious research opportunity.

Frederick Lewis Allen begins this short book (346 pages) where he left off in his last book (Only Yesterday) - with the stock market crash of 1929 - and ends it with the
advent of World War II in 1939. Allen skillfully weaves the minor events of this decade (the fads, books, crimes, machines, gadgets, personalities, movies, fashions, etc.) together
with the major events (the stock market crash, the Great Depression, and the New Deal) in a delightfully entertaining, informative fashion - assuming, of course, that you
enjoy American history!
The '29 crash had been immediately preceded by the Big Bull market that had carried investors and stocks onward and upward for some 2 years before it finally peaked. Investors, by then, were programmed to buy, buy, buy. All feared that they might miss one last opportunity to get richer. Stock transactions sometimes became so hectic that Wall Street could not keep up with the paperwork (no computers!). Some pundits of that
day were issuing warnings that stock prices were overvalued, that investors were investing too much borrowed money, but few investors were heeding these warnings. When stock prices began falling, nothing could stop them. By the time stock values hit
bottom on 13 November investors had lost enough money to finance World War I once, or pay off the national debt twice! In a matter of months 25% of the work force was unemployed; many of them were now standing in the ubiquitous breadlines, or peddling
apples for 5 cents on street corners.
The market crash triggered another major event of the 30s - the great depression. President Hoover insisted that the economy was only experiencing one of those cyclical
business cycles, that it would eventually self-correct, and that life in America would again be just great. He approved some actions to aid businessmen and failing banks, and
to create some jobs by expanding some federal work programs, but basically Hoover opposed any kind of relief for the unemployed or their families. The government, he thought, should do nothing to damage Americans initiative and rugged individualism. Later, Hoover approved some expenditures for seed and for animal feed, but vetoed any proposals to help the cold, the starving, or the unemployed. Hoover was above all
determined to balance the federal budget and he was certain that nature (and economic problems) would eventually run its course and that his hands off (laissez-faire) economic policy would prove to be the proper government response to the depression.
Between the crash of 29 and the presidential election of 1932, however, there was no visible improvement in the economy. Consequently, Hoovers defeat in the upcoming 1932 election was preordained. Thats what happened; Franklin Delano Roosevelt
became president.
FDR and Hoover had diametrically opposed views with regard to the federal governments role vis-à-vis the national economy and the depression. Once elected FDR immediately launched his various (alphabet soup-like) New Deal programs: they
included the NRA (to deal with economic planning, wages and working conditions, child and womens labor, etc.), the CWA and the WPA (to provide jobs); the AAA (to deal with farm problems); the CCC (to provide jobs related to environmental protection, tree planting, etc.); the PWA and the TWA (to build dams - thereby creating jobs, electricity, water for irrigation, flood controls, etc.). He also created the RFC, the FHA, the FCA,
the NYA, etc., etc. FDR was unafraid to create a government agency to deal with a problem. If one approach fails (frequently the case), he would say, Well try another.
The unemployed, he maintained, are not bums! They are victims of an economy over which they have no control. (A 1933 congressional investigation - a la Enron, Anderson, et al) indicated that the crash had to a considerable extent been generated by wheeling-dealing brokers, bankers, financiers, corporate managers and their pyramiding
schemes, mergers, etc.). FDRs role model cousin, Theodore Roosevelt, had said earlier that it was the governments responsibility to protect those who were unable to protect
themselves. FDR, in turn, said something similar, using different words: It is not the governments duty to further enrich those who already have much, but, rather, to assist
those who have little. FDRs words resonated with most Americans. They re-elected him again, again, and again. The Republicans soon recognized that FDR and his Democratic New Deal programs were basically anathema to what Republicans stood
for (small federal government, low taxes, etc.), and they began fighting FDR and his programs (the Democratic-Republican fight that FDR started continues to this day.), but FDR won most of the battles because he always enjoyed great majorities in both houses of congress and eventually he also had a friendly Supreme Court - because he personally made a total of 9 appointments to the court.
There is much more to say about this book, about FDRs struggle with those 9 old men of the Supreme Court, about the repeal of Prohibition, about the rise of organized crime,
etc., -- but you get the idea. My final word: Lewis is a delightful writer and the material is fascinating!

The best thing about this book is that unlike most other ones about the depression it was written by someone who experienced it at the time they experienced it - 1939. Spanning 1929 to 1939 it gives you a you-were-there feeling.

Most of the political commentary is just matter-of-fact with very little bias. Many depression books seem to be left-leaning and written by authors with political agendas, not this one. The fact is that many things actually were very corrupt in the years leading up to the depression.

Allen obviously liked FDR very much and yet he still always countered accolades for him with opposing opinions and even agrees with them at times.

This is not a hard-hitting expose' of the Depression years, but it is a highly informative book that is a great lesson in history.

Allen covers the period from September 3, 1929, to September 3, 1939. Interestingly, the first date is when the Bull Market reached its peak, and the last date is when England and France declared war on Germany. The book is an excellent contemporary account of the 1930's. The topics that Allen thought were noteworthy in 1939 are still noteworthy today. Anyone who reads this book should also read "Only Yesterday" which is Allen's account of the 1920's.

Karen is an amazing professional and her dedication to the field can be seen throughout the book. For anyone seeking information for postpartum depression, this book provides a realistic view of the women who experience postpartum and the women who help them.

For those seeking support for postpartum depression, this book provides facts, information and resources, as well as demystifies the therapeutic process. I think women will appreciate her honesty and understand the importance of seeking appropriate support in order to feel better.

Some time ago, I was living in a hellish state that was like some kind of bad drug trip: blurry consciousness, constant depression and lethargy, memory loss, attention deficit, and frequent suicidal thoughts that were nearly carried out on several occasions.

One day I was wandering in a haze after work, went inside a book store, and sought out books on depression. I read the premise of this book, and thought "what the hell, worth a shot."

After about 10 days of diet and nutritional modification to boost the mood-elevating brain chemicals as recommended in the book, I became a different person, and noticed a greatly increased energy level, and even reversal of hair loss! There were still some serious biochemical imbalances (such as chronic "yeast" and bacterial infections, food allergies, and chemical sensitivities) that affected my mental health, and remained undiscovered, but the nutritional information in this book set me on the right path. The sun began to shine again, and despite the remaining untreated conditions, there were enough "ups" to make life worth living again, and give me hope for the medication-free recovery that eventually did come about when I eventually became aware of and treated those other issues.

This book saved my life, and finally explained why some people can keep a smile through the worst misfortunes while others can be miserable while living the life of royalty.

Been there, still doing that.

I'm one who is helped by this program. I go off the program, get depressed (I cry alot - feel sad), back on, feel fine, feeling weepy goes away. Brain chemistry seems to be be just a little off. Cost is minimal. Vendor suggested I read this back in 94. Been taking L-tryosine since. 2 gr/d. 4 gr. when business is bad. I have a high anxiety wife, she is much more mellow when she takes it regularly. She has noticed the difference.

May not work for everyone as everyones chemistry is different but it is certainly worth a try, just make sure you keep at it for 2 or 3 months as it is not an instant fix.

If you suffer from these bed symptoms, consider purchasing a King Koil bed mattress.

King Koil mattresses are available in standard bed mattress sizes that include bed twin (single), bed double, bed queen, bed king and California bed king. As with any other form of bed mattress, the price will depend on the bed size and bed quality of the bed mattress. A single bed mattress will cost considerably less than a king sized bed mattress, but will not provide nearly as much space for bed sleeping.

Motifs in _you are a little happier than i am_ include emails, fruit, hamsters, loneliness, beauty, and sadness--what would have been a difficult and problematic combination of objects and abstract terms in the hands of a less talented poet. Tao Lin, however, links these elements effectively with plain, frank language that conveys immediate feelings and observations, often with sympathetic or humorous results.

The surprising concerns in these poems range from the personal to what many readers may resonate with. For example, in the poem "thanksgiving," Lin writes:

i feel most comfortable around middle-class japanese people
i know they are all thinking the same things as me

WHY ARE THE LINES SO LONG?
WHY AM I IN NEW JERSEY?

though their faces appear calm
their thoughts are exactly like i just put them
(Lin)

It does not seem to matter here whether the people are middle-class Japanese or middle-class any-other-American-or-foreigner. Lin points out how anyone might feel in this situation: the lines are long, and (more philosophically) why New Jersey? The contrast between calm faces, yelling interior monologue, the poet himself and Japanese people proves humorous when one reads Lin's conclusion to the poem "we just want to get our food/ and eat it/...and go to sleep."

An uniquely enjoyable, highly recommended collection. Tao Lin's other books include Bed, Eeeee Eee Eeee, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

I don't know what poetry is. These are poems I guess. I liked reading this book.

I don't think I usually like poetry. I went to a poetry reading tonight and I did not enjoy it. I liked this book. It was like reading transcripts of my own thoughts. It validated my thoughts somewhat I guess, in letting me know that other people thought similar things, and that other other people were publishing transcripts of them. I think writing like this is positive in that it encourages calm reflection on one's own life through direct analysis of another's. I feel like an idiot right now. I have tried to describe why I like this book. I like this book.

Real Life Explanation of Depressive Illness and it's Affects

This was the first work on depression authored with a real life perspective on the illness and its affects on "life" that I had read. Having been trained in the mental health field and being employed in a mental health related job, this was the first work to help me feel better about my own illness. It was so easy to be understanding and supportive of others with this illness, but when it came time for me to understand and to be caring for myself, it all but elluded me.

Also in this work I found the connections between depression, addiction, weight related issues, and hormonal problems. Every little piece of my spotty medical history came into focus under the hands of the author in this book. I have yet to read anything that has helped me on the road to understanding my depressive illness any more than this book. Having a lay person relate information through her own real experiences is a definate plus as well.

If you have a substance abuse problem, a must read!

The author feels that many substance abusers have an underlying emotional problem like depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder etc. They really need to be treated for this in order to get the substance abuse under control.

If you are having a substance abuse problem, read this book and be sure you get screened by a real professional for emotional problems. Keep an open mind and save yourself a lot of trouble and heartache. When the emotional issues get resolved, the substance abuse problem may practically take care of itself!

This is a very accessable book for anyone concerned about depression in a loved one or yourself. Written so people (not just professionals) can understand it. I've given it to several friends who were helped, too. Best of all, it helped my partner realize the behavior wasn't crazy but treatable. Excellent book.

A great depression "primer"

A great "primer" on depression. This is the first book I read on depression after reading Darkness Visible, and I still think it's one of the best, especially as the author's daughter, who suffered from depression, contributed to it.

This book takes the guilt out of mental illness.

This book is up to date in its information. It is very informative, and reader friendly. It explains the cause of some mental illness, addictions, phobias and anxieties. These down to earth explanations take all the guilt out of having a disorder, disability, or addiction. This distancing from self blame enables action and change.

My sister suffered from undiagnosed postpartum depression after the births of both her children. She and her family would have been spared so much suffering if this book had been available. Thank you, Mrs. Indman and Dr. Bennett, for helping countless women and their loved ones with this invaluable manual.

I believe this book is very well written. As someone who has experienced postpartum depression. I believe this book would have been very beneficial to Obgyn's, Nurse Practitioners and all who care for childbearing women. I also believe that myself and my family did not have suffer if people were more aware. This book is very concise and easy to understand. Dr. Bennett and Mrs. Indman have done a outstanding job to help and bring Postpartum Depression to the forefront. Thank you to you both.

"Beyond the Blues" is a wonderful resource. After discovering the book, I immediately ordered several more copies to share with counseling and lactation colleagues and with families in my practice. Everyone loves it! It is clearly written and easy to read with helpful information readily accessible. It is also written with compassion and filled with practical wisdom.
This book is an invaluable resource for mothers experiencing prenatal or postpartum distress, family members and all the professionals that work with new families: OB's, midwives and pediatricians, childbirth educators, doulas and lactation consultants. Thank you Drs. Indman and Bennett for your valuable contribution.

A 'must-have' book for all pre- & peripartum professionals

I highly recommend this book to pregnant families and all professionals, not only those who specialize in treating postpartum reactions. All ob-gyn's, doctors, lactation consultants, birth teachers, doulas and pediatricians should own and keep referring to this very accessible and accurate book. Perhaps more women (and their infants and families) who suffer in confusion behind closed doors, would be identified early and referred to a skilled professional for something that is so treatable, but too seldom treated.
As a psychotherapist treating women presenting with postpartum reactions, I have referred to the information in this book over and over. Drs Indman and Bennett are two reliable sources who have checked all their facts while intelligently turning this very complex topic into something so clear and understandable.

Most useful to me, are the treatment protocols at the back of the book. A look of relief washes over a pregnant client's face when, together we have identified her risk factors, and chosen a course of treatment that follows these detailed protocols. For women who find it so difficult to be vulnerable, or accept help or care, there is something very reassuring and validating in knowing that the psychotherapy we embark on is necessarily "prescribed" for her, and will give her the best chance of preventing or working through her depression or/and anxiety.
